PESHAWAR: In a decisive move to counter escalating terrorism threats, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Police have established their first-ever Sniper Squad, a specialized unit trained for precision operations in the province’s most volatile and mountainous regions.
The creation of this elite force underscores Pakistan’s determination to strengthen security along its western frontier and decisively counter militant threats.
According to the Central Police Office, the Sniper Squad will function under the command of the KP Elite Force, equipped with cutting-edge rifles, thermal imaging gear, and modern surveillance technology. Officials say the unit will serve as a “frontline deterrent” against extremist groups that continue to target security forces and civilians across the province.
Rigorous Training and Tactical Readiness

The formation of the Sniper Squad follows an intensive three-month training program focused on long-range marksmanship, target identification, and stealth movement in rugged terrain. Each unit—comprising 10 highly skilled personnel—is equipped to operate in extreme weather and low-light conditions, enhancing the police’s ability to engage militants operating from hidden positions.
Police officials emphasized that the newly trained snipers represent a major leap in operational precision and are now capable of executing high-risk missions previously limited to the military’s special forces.

In its initial phase, the Sniper Squad will be deployed across the province’s southern districts, the Malakand Division, and the border regions adjoining Afghanistan — areas long plagued by insurgent networks. These regions, characterized by complex terrain and porous borders, have been the focus of repeated militant incursions and attacks on security convoys.
Officials said the deployment plan aligns with the province’s broader counterterrorism strategy, which prioritizes rapid-response and preemptive precision operations against militant strongholds.
Integration with Pakistan’s Special Forces Framework

The new initiative by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police marks a significant advancement in maintaining law and order and strengthening counterterrorism efforts across the province. The force is expected to enhance the police’s professional capabilities, making operations in challenging and sensitive areas more effective and precise.
The province’s police already maintain other specialized units — including the Special Combat Unit (SCU) and the Elite Force — trained for hostage rescues and high-risk raids. The addition of a dedicated sniper division is expected to significantly improve coordination between the police and military during joint counterterrorism operations.
