Turkish President Erdogan Attends Reopening of 356-year-old Mosque in Istanbul

ISLAMABAD: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan attended the opening ceremony of the 356-year-old “Yeni Cami” in Istanbul’s Eminonu after the mosque’s restoration.

On the occasion, the Turkish President stated that “Praise be to Allah” that Yeni Cami (new mosque) has been opened which for a long time had been undergoing “restorations” and “renovations”, according to Turkish media.

First foundation of the Turkish mosque was laid in 1597

The wife of the Ottoman Sultan Murad III, Safiye Sultan, laid the mosque’s foundation in 1597. The mosque was after 60 years in 1665 for which Sultan Mehmed IV’s mother, Hatice Turhan Sultan, worked tirelessly.

Turkey’s General Directorate of Foundations started the restoration works in 2016.

At the event, Erdogan said thanked the artists and architects for their contribution on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, nation, and the foundation organization.
