ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has officially entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), marking a significant step towards strengthening football ties between the two nations.
The announcement, made on Wednesday, outlines the key areas of collaboration between the two footballing bodies, including coach development, talent identification, youth football, and women’s football. In a statement, the PFF emphasized that the partnership aims to “accelerate the growth of the sport” and enhance the technical expertise of both federations through mutual exchange.

Key Focus Areas for Collaboration
According to the PFF, this partnership will help in building a “more connected future” for football in both countries and foster a long-term development plan for the region. Areas such as marketing, referees, youth football, sports science, and football-related technologies are expected to receive attention, although the earlier agreement signed in 2023, during the tenure of the Haroon Malik-led PFF Normalisation Committee, saw limited activity in these domains.
The 2023 MoU, which concluded with the committee’s term, included a women’s football team tour and a friendly match between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. However, beyond these events, the partnership did not witness significant progress in other agreed areas.
The Signing Ceremony
The new MoU was signed by Mohsen Gilani, the recently-elected president of the PFF, and Yasser Al Misehal, president of the SAFF. This collaboration comes at a time when Saudi Arabia is cementing its position as a global football hub, following its successful bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, confirmed in December 2023. The kingdom is also set to host the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, among other prestigious football events.
A Promising Future for Regional Football
With Saudi Arabia’s increasing prominence in international football, this agreement holds significant promise for Pakistan’s growing football community. Experts suggest that the partnership could provide a strong foundation for improving the infrastructure, coaching standards, and overall competitiveness of Pakistan’s national teams, especially the women’s and youth sides.
