ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Assembly Speaker has urged the international community to uphold humanitarian law and safeguard civilian populations, while strongly condemning atrocities committed by Israel and India.

He was speaking at the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference in Geneva, said a statement issued by the National Assembly secretariat on Tuesday.

Describing Israeli actions against Palestinians as “a trial of conscience for all humanity,” Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq welcomed the recent ceasefire in Gaza as a positive step towards lasting peace.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, stressing that the ongoing suffering of civilians continues to shock the global conscience.

Turning to Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, he condemned what he termed as “atrocities and human rights violations” in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), including demographic alterations and the suppression of civil liberties.

While highlighting Pakistan’s restraint in response to India’s aggression, he reaffirmed the country’s right to defend its sovereignty and warned that India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty threatens regional stability.

Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq also condemned anti-Pakistan activities launched from Afghan territory by the Indian-backed terrorist group while defending Pakistan’s counter-terrorism operations as being centred on the protection of civilians.

On the issue of climate change, he described it as an escalating humanitarian crisis that disproportionately affects countries like Pakistan—nations that have contributed the least to global carbon emissions.

He called on the international community to extend fair and equitable financial support to vulnerable states facing the brunt of climate-related challenges.

Underscoring Pakistan’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy, Speaker Sadiq highlighted the country’s proposed UN Security Council Resolution 2788 as a clear reflection of its dedication to global peace and stability.

He concluded by emphasising that diplomacy, dialogue, and parliamentary cooperation are vital tools for promoting international understanding and strengthening global harmony.
