ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is preparing to restore direct air links with the United States after years of suspension, Aviation Minister Khawaja Asif said in a televised interview, signaling progress in discussions with American aviation authorities.

“Hopefully, permission will be granted soon,” Asif said, noting that the government was implementing international safety and operational standards to pave the way for the resumption of flights.

A team from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently visited Pakistan to conduct a safety audit.

Aviation experts said a positive outcome could allow Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to regain Category 1 status, a key requirement for launching non-stop flights to American destinations.

A PIA spokesperson called the US route “strategically vital,” citing strong demand among Pakistanis living in North America.

In a related development, PIA announced a new codeshare partnership with UAE-based Etihad Airways, effective October 31. The agreement covers both passenger and cargo services and includes coordination on frequent-flyer programs.

“This agreement marks a milestone for PIA,” the airline said in a statement, adding that it would give travelers access to destinations not directly served by PIA and enhance overall revenue.
