ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged Afghan authorities to take immediate and effective steps to dismantle terrorist networks operating from Afghan soil and continue to orchestrate attacks inside Pakistan.
He was talking to Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who made a telephone call to the Prime Minister on Saturday, an official statement said.
The Prime Minister apprised his Malaysian counterpart of the security situation along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border. He underscored that Pakistan seeks peace and stability in Afghanistan but continues to face cross-border terrorism emanating from Afghan soil.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the Afghan authorities must take effective measures to take immediate and effective steps to dismantle terrorist networks operating from Afghan soil that continue to orchestrate attacks inside Pakistan.
He reaffirmed that Pakistan had agreed to a temporary ceasefire at the request of the Afghan authorities to facilitate dialogue in Doha, and stressed the importance of tangible action against all terrorist entities, including Fitna-al-Khwarij, Fitna-al-Hindustan, TTP, and BLA, to restore peace and stability along the border.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim voiced deep concern over the situation and expressed Malaysia’s willingness to play a constructive role in de-escalating tensions and supporting efforts to restore peace in the region.
The two leaders also exchanged views on key regional developments. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif briefed his Malaysian counterpart on his participation in the signing ceremony of the Gaza Peace Agreement held in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Both leaders welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it would bring an immediate end to the suffering of the Palestinian people, guarantee unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, and lay the groundwork for lasting peace and stability in the region.
While thanking the leadership and people of Malaysia for the warm hospitality extended during his recent visit to Kuala Lumpur, Prime Minister Sharif expressed satisfaction that the understandings reached during the visit particularly regarding the export of halal meat and other mutually beneficial areas have elevated the Pakistan–Malaysia relations to new heights.
Pakistan and Malaysia established diplomatic ties in 1957, soon after Malaysia’s independence, and cooperate closely in multilateral forums such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Commonwealth.
In 2024, trade between Pakistan and Malaysia reached US$1.76 billion, an increase of 15.5 % compared with 2023.
