ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, on Sunday for a three-day official visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, and regional affairs.

Malaysian Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil welcomed the Prime Minister and his accompanying delegation at the Bunga Raya Complex in Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia’s national daily newspaper The Sun reported.

PM Sharif then reviewed a guard of honour comprising 28 officers and personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.

All major highways of Kuala Lumpur have been decorated with Pakistani and Malaysian flags.

During his visit, the Prime Minister will meet the Malaysian Prime Minister, while talks will also be held at the delegation level between the two countries, a Foreign Office statement said.

The visit from October 5 to 7 is being carried out at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

“The two leaders will also deliberate on enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade to explore opportunities for further cooperation in trade, IT, telecom, Halal industry, investment, education, energy, infrastructure, digital economy, and people-to-people ties,” the statement noted.

The ministry further said that both leaders are expected to witness the signing of agreements and MoUs for cooperation in several existing and new sectors.

“The visit underscores Pakistan’s continued commitment to strengthening ties with Malaysia.”

The Pakistani side looks forward to mutually beneficial engagements in Malaysia, building on the solid foundations of friendship and cooperation that exist between our two nations.

“The visit reflects a strong and enduring strategic partnership between Pakistan and Malaysia, rooted in mutual respect, shared interests, and close cooperation across a wide range of sectors,” the statement concluded.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his commitment to enhancing trade and economic engagement with Malaysia.

In a social media post on X, PM Sharif said he is greatly looking forward to a comprehensive exchange of views on the common desire to enhance trade and economic engagement, as well as bilateral cooperation in various fields.

Shehbaz Sharif said important global and regional matters will also be discussed. He hoped that Pakistan-Malaysia ties would continue to flourish.

Last month, Sharif instructed his administration to draw up a plan to boost exports, particularly beef, to Malaysia, noting the “enormous potential” to expand trade between the two countries.

Pakistan and Malaysia established diplomatic ties in 1957, soon after Malaysia’s independence, and cooperate closely in multilateral forums such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Commonwealth.

In 2024, trade between Pakistan and Malaysia reached US$1.76 billion, an increase of 15.5 % compared with 2023.
