ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has begun preparations to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in 2027, with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi approving plans for a new convention hall in Islamabad to accommodate high-level international events.
The decision was made during a review meeting at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Headquarters in Islamabad, where Naqvi assessed the progress of key development and infrastructure projects in the capital.
The meeting agreed to construct an additional convention hall adjacent to the Jinnah Convention Centre. Minister Naqvi stated that the new facility would feature a spacious main hall, multiple conference rooms, and meeting spaces designed to meet international standards.
He stressed the importance of engaging top local and international architects to ensure the project’s modern and globally competitive design.
“The completion of this project will strengthen Pakistan’s capacity to host major international conferences and events,” the Interior Minister remarked, underscoring the strategic significance of the initiative.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a regional intergovernmental organisation founded in 2001 in Shanghai, China. Its primary objectives are to strengthen mutual trust and neighborly relations among member states, promote regional peace, security, and stability, and foster cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, culture, education, energy, and counter-terrorism.
The SCO consists of eight member states, including China, Russia, Pakistan, India, and several Central Asian countries. It also includes observer states and dialogue partners from across Asia and beyond.
The most recent Heads of State Council meeting of the SCO was held from August 31 to September 1, 2025, in Tianjin, China, chaired by President Xi Jinping.
