ISLAMABAD: Authorities have issued a warning for Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi and several parts of the Sindh province, where intense rainfall, potentially exceeding 100 millimetres, is expected over the next 12 to 24 hours, raising the threat of urban flooding and disruptions to everyday life.

According to Zoom Earth, a weather tracking platform, a powerful weather system was developing over Sindh and was expected to strike major cities such as Karachi and Hyderabad shortly after midnight.

The system was likely to move out to sea by Thursday morning, but not before unleashing heavy downpours, particularly across lower Sindh.

Remain vigilant

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged residents in at-risk areas, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpurkhas, and Sukkur, to remain vigilant and follow official alerts closely to reduce risk and damage.

Inadequate drainage infrastructure

The forecast indicates that continued rainfall, coupled with inadequate drainage infrastructure, will likely result in sustained urban flooding in cities such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Mirpurkhas.

Flash flooding risks are also high in districts including Thatta, Badin, Jamshoro, and Dadu.

Concerns have been raised about rising water levels in the Indus River and its branches, which could threaten low-lying areas and exacerbate the flooding situation. Transport networks, including key roads and highways, may also be submerged, affecting mobility and public access.
