- Zuckerberg investing billions in AI compute infrastructure
ISLAMABAD: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Friday that Shengjia Zhao, co-creator of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, has been appointed chief scientist of Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Zuckerberg has recently embarked on a multibillion-dollar recruitment drive in the field of artificial intelligence, which includes a $14 billion investment in Scale AI. In June, he unveiled Meta Superintelligence Labs — a new division composed of leading AI researchers and engineers, according to Bloomberg.
Zhao’s name had been mentioned in a memo released in June alongside other new recruits, but Zuckerberg has now clarified that Zhao co-founded the lab and has served as its lead scientist from the very beginning.
Zhao will work closely with both Zuckerberg and Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, who is now serving as Meta’s Chief AI Officer.
Synthetic data initiatives
“Shengjia has already pioneered a number of breakthroughs, including a new scaling paradigm, and has proven himself a leader in the field,” Zuckerberg wrote in a post on social media. “I’m excited to collaborate with him closely to help bring his scientific vision to life.”
In addition to co-developing ChatGPT, Zhao was instrumental in building OpenAI’s GPT-4, its mini models, 4.1, and o3. He also previously led synthetic data initiatives at OpenAI, according to the June memo.
Meta Superintelligence Labs will focus on developing foundational models — such as the open-source Llama family — as well as AI-driven products and core research projects in fundamental artificial intelligence, reports CNBC.
Zuckerberg has stated that Meta will invest “hundreds of billions of dollars” into AI computing infrastructure over the coming years.
“The next few years are going to be incredibly exciting!” he added on Friday.
