ISLAMABAD/Naypyidaw: A military junta court in Myanmar on Friday sentenced ousted civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi to seven years in prison on corruption charges, after the 18-month trial of the Nobel laureate.
Suu Kyi was jailed on five counts of corruption related to chartering and maintaining a helicopter that caused a “loss to the treasury”, a legal source told AFP.
A political prisoner of the junta since the 2021 coup, Suu Kyi, 77, has been convicted on every charge levelled against her, ranging from illegally possessing walkie-talkies to corruption and violating Covid-19 restrictions.
The source on the condition of anonymity said that Suu Kyi’s all cases were finished and there were no remaining charges against her.
The source added that the civilian leader was in good health.
Media barred from attending court hearing
Media persons were barred from attending the court hearings and Kyi’s lawyers were banned from speaking to journalists. –AFP/APP
