ISLAMABAD/DUBAI: Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on Sunday arrested at least seven people including some dual nationals with links to Britain.

Among the arrested people included dual national, who took part in anti-government protests that earlier rocked the country.

Statement about the arrest of dual nationals

According to a statement carried out by Iran’s state media, at least seven main leaders of the recent protests related to the United Kingdom had been detained by intelligence services of the Revolutionary Guards, including some dual nationals attempting to leave the country.

Meanwhile, the British foreign ministry said it was seeking further information from Iranian authorities on reports of the arrest of British-Iranian dual nationals.

The reported arrests come after the unrest triggered by the September 16 death in detention of Kurdish girl Mahsa Amini, 22, who was arrested for wearing what the Iranian authorities said was wearing an inappropriate dress in violation of the Islamic dress code for women.

The widespread protests, participated by demonstrators from all walks of life calling for the fall of Iran’s ruling religious theocracy, have posed one of the biggest challenges to Iran since the Islamic revolution in 1979.
