ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has heaped praise on Islamabad United skipper Shadab Khan for his all-round displays in the ongoing HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 10, while also expressing staunch support for Azam Khan in the face of criticism.

Speaking on a local digital sports platform, Akhtar said he primarily sees Shadab as a bowler, describing his bowling as the most crucial aspect of his game.

“I’m more interested in him as a bowler and have always regarded him as such — his batting doesn’t concern me as much,” said Akhtar.

The former pacer did, however, acknowledge Shadab’s valuable contributions with the bat, particularly in pressure situations, and commended him for rising to the occasion when needed.

Positive team atmosphere

Akhtar also underlined the significance of a positive team atmosphere, emphasising that a player’s performance often hinges on the backing they receive from team management.

“Players are moulded in dressing rooms and team environments. If you make things difficult for them, it will show in their performances. They’ll start to feel unhappy with the team or management,” he remarked.

He went on to laud Shadab’s captaincy, calling him a “very intelligent player” who ensures unity within the Islamabad United camp.

“He keeps the side together and doesn’t allow any issues to arise,” Akhtar added.

Losing 40kg weight

When discussing Azam Khan, the former Test cricketer stood firmly by the under-fire wicketkeeper-batter, who has been criticised for his form and fitness.

“Azam Khan is a very talented cricketer who has been unfairly targeted,” Akhtar asserted.

Praising Azam’s explosive batting abilities, Akhtar offered a rather unique suggestion for how the 26-year-old might silence his critics and inspire others.

“If I were in his shoes, I’d make a documentary about myself shedding 40 kg in 100 days, and then go on to smash a century off just 33 balls,” he said.

Directly addressing the player, Akhtar added, “If you’re listening — and I know you always are — just do it, and show the world what you can truly achieve.
