WASHINGTON: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Washington to hold a meeting with US President Joe Biden and address US Congress.

President Zelensky said before his visit to the US that he wants to strengthen his country’s defense abilities amid repeated Russian drone and missile attacks.

The Ukrainian President’s political adviser told Reuters that the visit indicated the high degree of trust between the US and Ukraine and offered the President an opportunity to explain Kyiv’s need for weapons.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had announced the US would provide another 1.85 billion US dollars in military aid for Ukraine including a Patriot air defense system to assist it to ward off barrages of Russian missiles.

The spokesperson of the White House National Security Council John Kirby said that they would discuss diplomacy with Zelensky, but he would not be pressed for peace dialogue. The spokesperson said that the US is seeing no sign that President Vladimir Putin is willing to engage in peace talks.

Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russian troops were fighting like heroes during the war in Ukraine. He added that the forces would be equipped with modern arms and weapons and would achieve all of Russia’s goals and objectives.
