KARACHI: Former National Assembly Speaker Elahi Bux Soomro has passed away in Karachi, as confirmed by his family on Wednesday. His grandson, Sardarzada Maula Bux Soomro, shared the news via a Facebook post, stating that funeral prayers for the late political figure will be held tomorrow at 1 PM.
Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori expressed his condolences, describing Soomro as a “sophisticated” individual who was always concerned for the welfare of the people. “Today, we have lost a heartwarming personality,” the governor remarked.
Veteran politician Javed Hashmi also paid tribute, stating that Soomro would be “remembered in the fondest of memories.”
Soomro, who served as the 16th Speaker of the National Assembly from 1997 to 2001, came from a prominent political family in Sindh. Earlier this year, there were reports circulating about his death, but family members had clarified that he was alive at that time.
