WELLINGTON, New Zealand: New Zealand successfully rescued all 75 sailors aboard the HMNZS Manawanui after the navy vessel ran aground and sank off the coast of Samoa.
The ship, used for hydrographic surveys and marine salvage, struck a reef on the south coast of Upolu and started sinking amid difficult conditions, with strong winds and large ocean swells.
Samoan emergency services worked through the night to rescue the crew, none of whom were seriously injured.
New Zealand authorities confirmed that all crew members were safe, though the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Rescuers battled challenging currents and swells to complete the rescue. Efforts are now underway to assess the environmental impact of the wreck.
