WASHINGTON: Russian President Vladimir Putin will not prevail in the ongoing war with Ukraine, U.S. President Joe Biden said. He made these remarks during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House.

According to AFP, Keir Starmer and Biden on Friday delayed a decision to let Kyiv fire long-range Western-supplied missiles into Russia, a plan that sparked dire threats from Russia of a war with NATO.

The UK PM told media persons at the White House that he had a “wide-ranging talks about strategy” with President Biden but that it “wasn’t a meeting regarding a particular capability.”

Before the meeting some officials stated that PM Starmer would press President Biden to back his plan to send British Storm Shadow missiles to Kyiv to hit inside Russia as allies become increasingly concerned regarding the battleground situation.

But the UK PM indicated that he and President Biden would now discuss the plan at the UNGA in New York. As the two leaders met with their teams across a long table in the White House, President Biden played down a warning by Russian leader Vladimir Putin that allowing Kyiv to fire the weapons would mean the West was “at war” with Moscow.

“I don’t think much about Putin,” the US President told reporters when asked regarding the comments.

But while President Biden claimed it was “clear that President Putin will not prevail in this ongoing war,” he is understood to be reluctant to grant Kyiv’s insistent demand to be able to use long-range American-made ATACMS missiles against Russia’s territory.

President Biden is on his way out of office while the election is a toss-up between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly appreciated President Putin, and declined to take sides on the ongoing war during a debate with Kamila Harris on Tuesday, saying only: “I want the war to stop.”

PM Starmer denied he was worried regarding a Trump presidency, and stated the need to help Kyiv in coming weeks and months was urgent “whatever timetables are going on in other nations.”
