ABUJA: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigeria’s armed forces on Thursday warned regarding Kenya-style violence in protest demonstrations planned for next week due to soaring living costs, with the military saying it would head off “anarchy.”
Kenya was rocked by deadly protest demonstrations that forced the government to cancel new taxes. Nigeria’s economic reforms have seen a 40 percent increase in food rise but there has been no unrest. However, social media calls have been made for protests from August 1.
It is unclear who is behind the calls or whether protestors will take part at a time when many people are wary of losing work and cautious over earlier crackdowns.
Responding over the development, President Tinubu said that they were not afraid of protest demonstrations but their concern was the ordinary citizens, and the damages that will be done.
He said that they do not want to turn Nigeria into Sudan, adding they are talking regarding hunger, not burials. Prices have increased since Tinubu ended a costly fuel subsidy and liberalized the currency in reforms needed to revive the economy of the country.
