KATHMANDU: Monsoon-induced disasters have claimed 125 lives across Nepal in the past 38 days.
According to Nepal Police, as of Thursday afternoon, landslides, floods and other monsoon disasters killed 38 people in Gandaki Province, 23 in Lumbini, 22 each in Bagmati and Koshi, eight in Sudurpaschim, seven in Karnali and five in Madhesh Province.
Overall, 143 people were wounded across the country, including 34 in Koshi Province, 33 in Karnali, 29 in Gandaki, 15 in Bagmati, 14 in Sudurpaschim, nine each in Lumbini and Madhesh and Bagmati provinces.
A total of 222 houses, 43 bridges, 80 sheds one school, and two government offices were damaged during that time which displaced 3,721 families and killed 585 cattle.
Nepal frequently witnesses deadly accidents due to poorly constructed roads, inadequately maintained vehicles, and reckless driving. Government statistics revealed that nearly 2,400 fatalities occurred on Nepali roads in the year up to April.
The dangers of road travel intensify during the annual monsoon season, when rains trigger landslides and floods across the mountainous terrain. Monsoon rains, vital for replenishing water supplies and offering relief from summer heat across South Asia from June to September, also bring widespread devastation.
