TEHRAN, Iran: A top United Nations official has called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant for Bezalel Smotrich, whom she describes as the “mastermind” behind Israel’s genocidal policies.
Francesca Albanese, the UN’s Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian Territories, expressed confusion over why the ICC prosecutor has not yet requested an arrest warrant for Smotrich.
She labeled him as “a key mastermind of Israel’s genocidal policies against the Palestinians.”
Albanese’s remarks followed the Israeli cabinet’s approval of Smotrich’s plan to authorize five settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has accused Israel of genocide and ordered the regime to cease any actions under the 1949 Genocide Convention.
Tensions have escalated since Israel’s war on Gaza, which began in October 2023 and has resulted in the deaths of approximately 37,900 Palestinians mostly women and children.
