JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has welcomed the decision of Armenia to recognize Palestinian statehood, terming it a significant step toward complying with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
The OIC in a statement issued on Saturday, said this move will support global efforts and stances aimed at ending the Israeli occupation and enabling the Palestinian people to return, obtain the right to self-determination and an independent state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The organization reiterated its call for international recognition of Palestine and urged all countries to follow suit, joining international efforts to attain regional peace and stability through the two-state solution.
Armenia yesterday announced its official recognition of the State of Palestine amid ongoing violence against the civilian population by Israeli authorities in Gaza.
The Foreign Ministry in a statement said that the country took the decision to reaffirm its commitment to international law and the principles of sovereignty, equality and peaceful coexistence of peoples.
Earlier, a series of countries had recognized the State of Palestine during the war between Israel and Hamas.
“Confirming its commitment to international law, equality of nations, sovereignty and peaceful coexistence, the Republic of Armenia recognizes the State of Palestine,” Yerevan said.
According to the Gaza health ministry, Israel’s relentless bombardment has killed at least 37,500 people in Gaza, mostly women and children.
