NEW YORK: In a statement delivered at the UN Security Council, the EU’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, condemned the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, likening it to a “man-made disaster.” Borrell emphasized the urgency of addressing the crisis, highlighting the devastating impact on the Palestinian population, particularly women and children.
Borrell underscored that the situation in Gaza is not a result of natural disasters but rather deliberate actions, stressing that the survival of the Palestinian population is at stake. Israeli authorities’ stringent control over humanitarian aid deliveries into Gaza has exacerbated the crisis, leading to a catastrophic food shortage. Borrell lamented the closure of traditional aid routes and the use of starvation as a weapon of war.
In response to the aid blockade, foreign governments have resorted to alternative methods such as airdrops to deliver life-saving supplies. Efforts are underway to establish a maritime aid corridor to ensure essential aid reaches Gaza. However, Borrell expressed concern over the challenges faced in providing humanitarian assistance due to ongoing restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities.
Borrell addressed concerns about EU member states’ roles in the conflict, acknowledging internal differences in approach. He highlighted efforts by some EU members to call for a review of the EU-Israel cooperation agreement in light of human rights considerations. Borrell emphasized the importance of upholding international law and ensuring accountability for human rights violations in the region.
Despite facing criticism from Israeli officials, Borrell reaffirmed the EU’s unwavering support for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres amid unjustified attacks. He stressed the crucial role of UN agencies, particularly UNRWA, in providing vital assistance to Palestinian refugees. Borrell reiterated the EU’s commitment to working with the international community to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people and seek lasting solutions to the conflict in the region.
Borrell’s remarks underscored the critical need for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The EU remains steadfast in its support for UN efforts and calls for concerted international solidarity to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population.
