NEW YORK: The European Union foreign affairs chief on Tuesday denounced the lack of aid entering into Gaza as a man-made tragedy in which starvation is being used as a weapon.
Josep Borrell told the UN Security Council that while condemning what is happening in Ukraine, we have to use the same words for what’s happening in Gaza.
He noted that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is not a natural disaster like a flood or earthquake but it is a man-made.
According to Gaza health minister more than 31,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed while more than 100,000 wounded in the Israeli bombardment in the besieged enclave.
Josep Borrell added that the situation in Gaza is unacceptable. He said the survival of the population of Gaza is at stake saying it is a wide-scale destruction. The EU official said everything has been destroyed in Gaza, systematically.
Gaza is in the grip of a catastrophic-level food crisis. Senior UN officials have expressed concerns over the looming famine threat in Gaza seeking an urgent action to avoid a humanitarian disaster. More than 25 Palestinians have already died of starvation, the majority of them is children.
Because of the difficulties of delivering aid by road, some foreign nations have resorted to airdrops to help the people in Gaza. A system for the delivery of aid through the sea is also being established.
In light of the increasing humanitarian crisis during the war in Gaza, EU members Ireland and Spain have urged the European Commission to take a review of the cooperation agreement between the EU and Israel.
