Erdogan Offers Mediation in Somalia-Ethiopia Tensions

MOGADISHU: Turkiye President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held an intensive meeting on Saturday and discussed a range of pressing issues, including Israeli atrocities in Palestinian territories.

According to Somalia’s Communications Directorate, the meeting, held at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, also discussed strengthening Turkiye-Somalia relations, counterterrorism efforts, as well as regional and global concerns. During the meeting, President Erdogan reaffirmed Turkiye’s steadfast support for Somalia across various domains, with a particular emphasis on bolstering defence cooperation.

Moreover, Erdogan expressed Turkiye’s readiness to engage in mediating efforts aimed at alleviating tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia.

Highlighting the imperative of halting Israel’s aggressive actions in Palestinian territories, President Erdogan underscored the necessity of establishing an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders as the cornerstone for a lasting peace.

The meeting was attended by Turkiye’s National Defense Minister Yasar Guler, Head of the National Intelligence Organization Ibrahim Kalin, and President’s Chief Advisor Akif Cagatay Kilic.
