PARIS: Human Rights Watch (HRW) has sounded the alarm on governments worldwide for their practice of “transnational repression,” which extends beyond borders to target dissenting citizens. According to HRW, this phenomenon is having a chilling effect on political criticism and requires urgent attention from international bodies.

The HRW report highlights various methods employed by governments, including killings, abductions, and digital attacks, to silence dissidents living abroad. These abuses often target human rights activists, journalists, and political opponents, leading to a serious infringement of freedom of expression.

The misuse of Interpol’s red notices is a significant concern, enabling governments to arrest individuals abroad for possible extradition.

While some countries like Australia and the United States have taken steps to address transnational repression, HRW emphasizes the need for more comprehensive action to protect dissidents and uphold human rights globally.
