The former captain will fill the void at Essex left by the retirement of Alastair Cook at the end of last season.

Elgar said that he is thrilled to embark on this new episode of his cricketing journey with Essex. He signed a three-year contract with the English County on Friday.

Essex coach Anthony McGrath said that the former captain of South Africa has had an outstanding cricket career and has showed to the world his desire to score high runs.

The coach maintained that his achievements in the cricket speak volumes regarding his capabilities and they are excited to witness his impact at the English county.  Elgar played 86 Tests and over 5,000 runs for South Africa during his international career.
