Pakistan Electoral Body Reviews Security Measures for General Elections 2024

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday held in important meeting to review security measures in preparation for the general elections 2024, scheduled for February 8.

The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), Sikandar Sultan Raja, chaired the meeting, which included members of the commission, the secretary, and the Secretary of Interior, Aftab Akbar Durrani.

The media reports say that the meeting addressed security concerns related to the general elections, including the transfers of Inspectors General (IGs) and Deputy Commissioners (DCs). Following the discussions, Aftab Akbar Durrani headed to the Prime Minister’s House. In his informal conversation, Durrani assured that the required number of security personnel for the elections would be in place.

Earlier on Monday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) officially disclosed data revealing that the nomination papers of the 3,240 candidates aspiring to participate in the national and provincial elections have been rejected by returning officers (ROs).

As per the ECP’s released data, 1,024 candidates faced ineligibility for participating in the National Assembly elections, and an additional 2,216 individuals failed to secure approval for the provincial assembly race.

Out of a total of 25,951 submissions, the ROs approved 22,711 candidates. For the National Assembly, 6,449 candidates received the green light, while nomination papers of the 1,024 candidates faced rejection.

The ROs accepted 16,262 nominations for various provincial assembly seats. Punjab witnessed the highest number of rejections (521) for National Assembly nominations, followed by Sindh (166), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (152), Balochistan (92), and the Islamabad Capital Territory (93).
