BRUSSELS: NATO countries expressed their solidarity with Israel and condemned the recent attack by Hamas, emphasizing the importance of a proportionate response to the crisis.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant engaged with his counterparts from the US-led military alliance via videolink to provide an update on the ongoing military operations in response to the actions of Islamist militants, which tragically resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people, predominantly civilians.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg conveyed the alliance’s strong condemnation of the terrorist attacks and reassured Israel that it does not stand alone. Allies stressed Israel’s right to defend itself with proportionality in the face of these unjustifiable acts of terror.

Additionally, NATO member states called for the immediate release of all hostages by Hamas and advocated for the utmost protection of civilian lives. It was made clear that no nation or organization should exploit the situation or escalate tensions further.

The statement also revealed that several NATO allies are offering practical support to Israel as it continues to respond to the evolving situation.

The conflict in Gaza has led to a significant loss of life, with more than 1,200 reported casualties due to Israel’s continuous campaign of air and artillery strikes, causing over 338,000 people to be displaced, according to the UN.

US President Joe Biden, while strongly supporting Israel and supplying military aid, has emphasized the importance of adhering to the rules of war, even in the midst of intense emotions and frustration.

British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps underscored that Israel’s actions were targeted at combatants and terrorists in Gaza rather than civilians, highlighting the critical distinction that the international community should recognize.
