MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has characterized the legal proceedings against former US President Donald Trump as “politically motivated persecution.” Putin’s comments come as Trump faces a series of charges related to election interference, sparking controversy and international attention.

Speaking at an economic forum in the far eastern city of Vladivostok, Putin expressed his stance on the ongoing legal challenges against Trump, stating, “As for the persecution of Trump, for us, in the current environment, it’s good because it shows the rottenness of the American system. It is a politically motivated persecution of one’s competitor.”

Putin, who has previously served in the Soviet security services, further emphasized, “And this shows who we are fighting … As they said in Soviet times: ‘the bestial face of American imperialism.'”

The Kremlin has consistently defended the former US president against various charges and investigations. Trump’s legal issues have become a contentious issue in American politics and have drawn attention from leaders around the world.

Putin Sees No Change in US Foreign Policy

The strained relations between Washington and Moscow, which have been marked by a series of disagreements and conflicts during Putin’s leadership, have further deteriorated since Russia’s large-scale hostilities in Ukraine began last year. Putin remarked that he did not anticipate any change in the US foreign policy stance toward Russia, regardless of “whoever will be elected president” next year.

He also accused Washington of cultivating anti-Russian sentiments among the American public, stating, “Current authorities have directed American society in an anti-Russian spirit. They’ve done it, and now, somehow, turning this ship in the other direction will be very difficult.”
