PARIS: A video circulating online, showing an ankle monitor designed for children, has sparked outrage among parents who believed the device to be real and capable of tracking and even delivering electric shocks to misbehaving children. However, it has now been revealed that the video is a clever fabrication by a well-known TikTok prankster who specializes in creating lifelike, yet entirely fake, products.

The video, which quickly gained traction across TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook, presented a seemingly straightforward solution for sleep-deprived parents dealing with young children. The video showcased an ankle monitor resembling those used by individuals on house arrest. This fictitious device was packaged convincingly and demonstrated with the presenter fitting it onto a young boy’s ankle, showcasing how an accompanying app could monitor the child’s movements.

Concerned individuals shared the video, expressing their dismay over the apparent introduction of a criminal-style tracking device for children. The video’s viral nature led to widespread discussions and alarm on social media platforms. Twitter account Truthseeker’s reposting of the video garnered over 30,000 views.

Truth Behind Ankle Monitor

However, the truth behind the video has since come to light. The video’s creator, a TikTok user known as “legbootlegit,” frequently shares content centered around pranks involving fictitious products. In some instances, he even demonstrates how he fabricates realistic packaging for these sham items. The primary aim of his content is to provide comedic entertainment rather than deceive or mislead.

Subsequent clarification from the creator revealed that the video was a collaborative effort with artist “shampoooty,” who crafts unusual objects resembling toys. This collaborative effort led to the fabrication of the fictional ankle monitor. A closer examination of the video highlighted several clues that indicated its fictional nature.

The packaging bore a resemblance to that of the renowned American toy company “Little Tikes,” but the name was humorously altered to “Little Yikes.” Furthermore, the TikTok account “Legboot” was discreetly showcased in the corner of the packaging.

The ankle monitor hoax serves as a reminder of the potential for online content to deceive and generate unwarranted reactions. While the initial shock and concern were valid responses, the clarification demonstrates the power of creative digital media to entertain and spark conversation, even when the content itself is entirely fictional.
