The regional presidents also praised the excellent performance of the women’s team on their World Cup triumph in Australia and New Zealand.

Earlier Monday, prosecutors at Spain’s top criminal court said they had opened an initial inquiry into Rubiales’ kiss. They believed that his act could constitute a crime of “sexual assault”.

Star footballer Jenni Hermoso had said that she felt like the “victim of assault” at the medal ceremony after Spain won the Women’s World Cup in Sydney on August 20.
