MOSCOW: A delegation of Russian military officials, including Moscow’s deputy defense minister, has arrived in Libya on Tuesday in response to an invitation from pro-Moscow military leader Khalifa Haftar.
Haftar, a key supporter of Libya’s eastern administration, shares a close affiliation with Russia’s private Wagner mercenary group, which plays a role in guarding military and oil infrastructure within the country.
This visit marks the first official interaction between Russian military representatives and Libya. Led by Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-bek Yevkurov, the delegation’s visit was organized following discussions held during the Army-2023 expo and the Moscow Conference on International Security earlier this month.
Cooperation Between Russia and Libya
According to the Russian defense ministry, the visit’s primary focus will be on exploring avenues for cooperation in combating international terrorism and other areas of mutual interest. The visit also underscores Russia’s growing engagement in African affairs.
The Wagner mercenary group, known for its involvement in various global conflicts, holds a significant military presence in Africa. The group has established partnerships with several nations across the continent, including Mali and the Central African Republic.
The timing of this visit coincides with heightened attention on Russia’s activities in Africa, particularly following a recent video statement by Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin. In the video, Prigozhin indicated that the group’s activities are aimed at contributing to greater freedom in Africa.
