WASHINGTON: Counsels for US former President Donald Trump have requested to fix April 2026 the trial date on the charges that he conspired to overturn the 2020 election, reported western media on Friday.
The development comes as lead prosecutor Jack Smith is seeking to start the case from January 2, 2023. Trump is currently facing four prosecutions in the middle of his Presidential campaign.
Trump Seeks April 2026, Trial Date in Election Case
The ex-president’s lawyers in their request have sought justice and fair trial against Trump. They argued the number of documents in the case would require months to process.
Judge Tanya Chutkan will decide the trial date on August 28.
Jack Smith has stated that the government’s proposed date of January 2 to begin trial gives enough time to defendant to prepare a dcase and speedy trial is in the interest of the public.
The main allegation against Trump is that he covered up hush money payments to a porn star in a move to deceive campaign finance rules before the 2020 election.

The government also accuses Trump of mishandling classified documents that he took from the White House. The documents include military plans and nuclear secrets, and conspiring with his staff to hide them from investigators.
Biden’s attorney general, Merrick Garland, has appointed Smith as a special counsel in the case pertaining to election conspiracy case. Trump and his team have termed the prosecution against him, as politically biased.
