ISLAMABAD: As many as 42 journalists were murdered across the country during the last four years, Pakistan’s Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Javed Abbasi told the Senate on Friday.
Responding to a question from Jamaat-e-Islami’s Senator Mushtaq Ahmed, the minister said that it was a critical matter and urged the authorities to take prompt action against the culprits. He also proposed to provide journalists with special security.
He directed the Ministry of Interior to prepare a comprehensive report on the matter and present it to the House within two months.
Balochistan Awami Party’s Senator Danesh Kumar pointed out that more than 10 journalists were murdered in Balochistan instead of the three mentioned in the report. In response to this, the minister said that the report was compiled after a thorough consultation with all the concerned quarters of the provinces and if someone had put up a wrong figure, they must be held accountable as it was a sensitive matter.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s (JUI-F) Senator Kamran Murtaza proposed to conduct a thorough probe to find out on which subject were the journalists working before they were murdered.
Responding to this, the minister assured the Senate that a comprehensive report would be compiled on the matter. As per the statistics, 15 journalists were murdered in Punjab, 11 in Sindh, 13 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 3 in Balochistan.
