26 Killed in Ferry Accident in Nigeria

ABUJA: Local officials said on Sunday that as many as 26 people were killed and several others missing following a ferryboat capsized on a lake in north-central Nigeria.

Spokesperson for the governor of Niger state Bologi Ibrahim confirmed the accident and said that boat was carrying over 100 people, including children and women. He added that the victims were going to their farms.

He told the media that 26 people were killed in the deadly accident. He added that 30 people were rescued by the men of emergency services. He maintained that a joint rescue operation by local divers, marine police and Niger State Emergency Management Agency is being conducted to search for the missing persons.

Earlier, in July, over 100 people died when an overloaded ferry capsized in a remote area of Niger state, in one of the worst such incidents in recent years.

As per media reports, overcrowding and poor maintenance are responsible for accidents in Nigeria.
