2 Dead, 16 Missing in China Landslide: State Media

BEIJING: At least two persons died, and sixteen others are missing while a landslide triggered by heavy rains near China’s city of Xi’an, official media reported Saturday. The incident took place in the northern part of China.

China has faced lethal floods and heavy rainfall in recent days, with the death toll from storms in the northern areas of the country reaching 78 on Friday, according to official media.

According to state-run CCTV, “Affected by heavy rainfall, on August 11… there was an abrupt mountain flash flood and landslide,”. The television reported that the initial investigation showed that two homes in the area have been washed away and roads, power supply, and bridges have also been damaged,”.

CCTV maintained that four trapped people have been rescued and shifted to safer places.

Chinese state-run media reported rescue efforts were underway on Saturday morning as sixteen people remained missing after the incident in the region.

Emergency management officials in the area warned Saturday that the affected part of the country would see “several rounds” of heavy storms in upcoming days.
