17 Killed as Heavy Rains, Flash Floods Hit Parts of Philippines

ISTANBUL: At least 17 people lost their lives and thousands of others were displaced after heavy rains and the follow-up floods hit many regions in the Philippines.

According to the Southeast Asian nation’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), reported that last Friday several low-pressure areas (LPA) generated heavy rains and flash floods in several parts of the country since early this month.

The continued rains and floods forced more than five municipalities to declare a state of emergency and calamity.

Displacement due to Heavy Rain

Meanwhile, Data from NDRRMC showed that some 71,442 people were also displaced due to the rains and floods, most of which were later relocated to 123 evacuation centers. However, two people are still missing.

The heavy rain and floods also damaged more than 530 houses. The Bicol area of the archipelago nation was the one highly affected with at least five fatalities.
