15 Worshippers Killed in Terrorist Attack at Burkina Church

OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso: At least 15 civilians were killed and two others wounded during a terrorist attack on a Catholic church in Burkina Faso on Sunday.

According to a senior church official the Catholic community of Essakane village was the victim of a terrorist attack on Sunday.

Dori diocese, Jean-Pierre Sawadogo, said 15 people were killed and two injured in the attack primarily.

Sawadogo denounced those who continue to cause wreak death and desolation in the African state the attack calling for peace and security in Burkina Faso.

Essakane village, where the attack occurred, is located in three borders zone in the northeast of the country, near the common borders of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger.

Militant Attacks in Burkina Faso

This is just the latest attack in a series of killings blamed on jihadist groups active in the area, some of which have targeted churches while others have involved the abduction of religious personalities.

Burkina Faso is part of the vast Sahel region, which has been facing battle against rising extremism since Libya’s civil war started in 2011, followed by a takeover of northern Mali in 2012.

The jihadist insurgency spilled into Niger and Burkina Faso from 2015.  When Captain Ibrahim Traore took over power in 2022, it was the country’s second military coup in less than a year.

Overall, 20,000 people in Burkina Faso have been killed in the violence, while over two million people have been displaced.
