According to the AFP, the defence ministry said that ” the 15 servicemen were dead as a result of the inferno that broke out in barracks of the engineer and sniper company of the army unit while the condition of three servicemen was assessed as serious.

The ministry said that the fire broke out at around 1:30 am on Thursday in the remote village of Azat in Armenia’s eastern Gegharkunik.

It also said that the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

Last August 2022, more than a dozen people were killed in an explosion and subsequent fire at the busy market in Armenia’s capital Yerevan.

The Caucasus nation of around three million citizens is still recovering from the 2020 war with Azerbaijan, which ended in a heavy defeat, sparking a political crisis.

Despite the end of the large-scale fighting, tussles persist between the two ex-Soviet Union rivals over their borders.
