MEXICO CITY, Mexico: Mexican authorities Tuesday said they found 11 bodies in a region hit by turf wars between drug cartels.
The office of Chiapas state prosecutor said it had opened a murder investigation after finding the bodies in Morelia in the municipality of Chicomuselo. He, however, didn’t give further details about the circumstances of these deaths or the victims.
Security forces have launched patrols in the area near the border with Guatemala in an effort to find the perpetrators, it said in a statement.
Chiapas attracts tourists with its lush jungle, indigenous communities and ancient Mayan ruins.
But the region has also seen increasing violence involving criminal gangs fighting for control of people-smuggling routes and drugs.
Mexico has seen more than 450,000 murders since the start of a controversial anti-drug military operation in 2006, according to official figures.
