Zimbabwe’s Newly Elected President Appoints Son, Nephew as Deputy Ministers

HARARE: Newly re-elected President of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday appointed his son and one of his nephews as deputy ministers.

Mnangagwa’s Cabinet comprises of loyalists from his ruling ZANU-PF party.  The decision to appoint his 34-year-old son David Kudakwashe Mnangagwa as deputy finance minister and nephew Tongai Mnangagwa as deputy tourism minister was slammed by the opposition.

Opposition rejects Mnangagwa’s victory

Main opposition has rejected Mnangagwa’s victory in elections last month while Western and African observers had also questioned the credibility of the elections.

Many of old ministers have been retained by Mnangagwa in his new Cabinet while several young members of ZANU-PF are also included.

Opposition CCC expresses concern on appointing family members by Mnangagwa.

CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi in a statement said despite thinking of national issues Mnangagwa has set up an infrastructure to support his family.

Mnangagwa won the re-election by securing 52.6% of the vote in the August. 23-24 elections. This would be the final term of Mnangagwa as per the constitution.

ZANU-PF also retained its majority in the parliament but with not enough numbers to amend the constitution without the cooperation of the opposition.
