BULAWAYO: Zimbabwe took a significant step towards securing a spot in the World Cup as they clinched a tense 14-run victory over Oman in the Super Six stage of the World Cup Qualifier. Sean Williams played a pivotal role with his third century of the tournament, helping his team post a challenging total of 332 for seven in their 50 overs.
The African side, carrying over wins against the West Indies and the Netherlands from the group stage, now sits at the top of the Super Six standings. The top two teams from this stage will earn berths in the World Cup.
Zimbabwe’s quest to qualify for the global one-day showpiece after an eight-year absence got off to an impressive start. Williams, who has been in sensational form throughout the tournament, scored a magnificent 142 off just 103 deliveries, including 14 boundaries and three sixes. His innings provided the foundation for Zimbabwe’s imposing total.
Oman Play Valiantly in Their Chase
Oman, the underdogs in the race for World Cup qualification, fought valiantly in their chase. Opener Kashyap Prajapati’s impressive century, a brilliant knock of 103 off 97 balls, kept Oman in contention. However, Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani and Tendai Chatara’s timely wickets and exceptional fielding efforts, including a remarkable catch by Luke Jongwe, put them on the brink of victory.
With some late blows from the lower order, Oman needed 39 runs from the final 17 balls. However, Zimbabwe’s bowlers held their nerve, and captain Zeeshan Maqsood’s return to the crease after retiring injured was not enough to guide Oman to victory. Richard Ngarava’s exceptional penultimate over, conceding just two runs, proved crucial as Zimbabwe sealed the win.
Williams’ heroics with the bat, along with notable contributions from Sikandar Raza (42) and Luke Jongwe (43 not out), propelled Zimbabwe to a formidable total. Now, depending on other results, Zimbabwe has a chance to secure their place in the World Cup when they face Sri Lanka on Sunday.
Oman, on the other hand, faces an uphill battle in their next match against the Netherlands. While their chances of qualification are slim, their spirited performance against Zimbabwe showcased their fighting spirit and resilience throughout the tournament.
