BRATISLAVA: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concern on Friday over NATO’s indecision regarding Sweden and Ukraine’s membership bids, emphasizing that the lack of clarity poses a threat to the strength of the alliance and global security.
Amidst an ongoing conflict with Russia for over 16 months, Kyiv has grown increasingly frustrated with its Western allies’ commitment to guarantee its future membership in NATO.
During a press conference in Slovakia, Zelensky highlighted the need for unity within NATO on the issue, stating, “This is a threat to the strength of the alliance. This is very important for the security of the whole world.”
NATO Summit in Vilnius
Zelensky also emphasized the significance of the upcoming Vilnius summit and expressed hope for positive outcomes or at least progress towards a favorable resolution. He underlined that the situation with Russia is closely linked to the alliance’s response and that it is crucial for NATO to demonstrate strength and unity.
The Ukrainian president further stated his expectation of “defense packages” at the summit, emphasizing the importance of concrete actions with clear deadlines rather than mere promises.
Zelensky, who recently visited Prague, is scheduled to travel to Turkey for discussions with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan later on Friday.
