LONDON: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged European unity following Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban visit to Russia and meeting with President Vladimir Putin, which drew criticism from EU leaders and Ukraine.
Speaking at a summit at Britain’s Blenheim Palace, Zelensky emphasized the importance of solidarity in supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression. He stressed the need for Europe to remain unified, stating, “Unity in Europe always leads to strong decisions.”
Zelensky’s call for unity followed Orban’s visit to Moscow on July 5, part of what he termed a “peace mission” involving talks in Kiev, Beijing, and with former US President Donald Trump.
Zelenskyy criticized attempts by any individual to negotiate with Moscow without considering broader European and Ukrainian interests.
Arriving at the summit, Orban expressed solidarity with Ukraine, stating, “We are with you,” but cautioned against seeking solutions through military means.
The summit occurs amid what Zelensky described as a challenging phase in Ukraine’s conflict with Russia, with concerns heightened over US domestic politics potentially affecting Washington’s support for Kiev.
Beyond the summit, Zelenskyy noted plans to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and King Charles III to discuss defense cooperation, including agreements to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities. He praised the UK’s steadfast support since Russia’s invasion, highlighting their determination to counter Russian aggression.
