KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the pivotal role of cooperation with European Union (EU) allies in determining the duration of the conflict with Russia during a meeting with EU foreign ministers in Kyiv on Monday.

The ministers gathered in the Ukrainian capital to demonstrate the bloc’s enduring support for Ukraine, marking the first historic gathering held outside the EU member states’ borders.

In a statement released by his office, President Zelensky highlighted the direct link between joint efforts and the eventual resolution of the ongoing war, stating, “Our victory directly depends on our cooperation: the more strong and principled steps we take together, the sooner this war will end.”

Zelensky Calls for Extending EU’s Sanctions on Russia

Zelensky outlined specific measures he believes the EU should undertake to aid in ending the conflict. He called for an expansion of the EU’s sanctions regime on both Russia and Iran, the latter of which supplied attack drones to Russian forces. Additionally, he urged the acceleration of efforts within the EU to redirect “frozen Russian assets to finance the restoration of war-torn Ukraine,” emphasizing the importance of financial resources in rebuilding the nation.

EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell reassured President Zelensky of the bloc’s steadfast commitment to Ukraine, stating, “The European Union is prepared to stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes.” Borrell’s statement highlighted the EU’s enduring dedication to supporting Ukraine in the ongoing war, emphasizing the significance of unity and collaboration in achieving a peaceful resolution.
