KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his frustration over easing of sanctions on Russia by his country’s allies stressing for a fresh wave of punitive measures on Moscow, Western media reported on Friday.

In a speech the Ukrainian leader said that Kyiv has seen a long pause by allies regarding sanctions on Russia. He added that Russia has been making active attempts to evade sanctions.

Zelensky seeks sanctions on Russia’s energy sector

Zelensky was of the view that Russia’s energy sector should be focused to keeping the country under pressure.

He said more sanctions should be imposed against Russia’s energy sector, supplies going to the terrorists and permeant blocking of Russia’s financial sector.  “The world’s sanctions offensive must resume,” he added.

During the speech he said Russian President Vladimir Putin was behind the fatal plane crash that claimed 10 lives including Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of the Wagner mercenary group last month.

“He killed Prigozhin, at least we all have this information and not any other,” he stated.

Earlier Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko had said Kyiv rejects any suggestion of easing sanctions against Russia in an attempt to resume the UN-backed grain deal.

Nikolenko in a statement on social media said easing sanctions against Russia in exchange for the restoration of the grain deal would be a victory for Russia.
