NEW YORK: President Volodymyr Zelensky denouncing Russian invasion on Ukraine on Wednesday demanded the UN Security Council to strip Moscow of its veto power.

He said that the world knows truth about the war on Ukraine adding that it was a criminal and unprovoked aggression by Russia against Ukraine.

President Zelensky stressed on the global body to strip Russia of its veto power right saying that such important power should not be given to an aggressor.

Ukrainian leader strongly believed that it was not possible to stop the war because all the efforts in this regard had been vetoed by the aggressor.

Veto power belonged Soviet Union, not Russia

President Zelensky added that the veto power belonged to the former Soviet Union and not to President Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

He alleged that Russia was still keeping the veto power through backstage manipulations.

It is pertinent to mention that Russian side questioned the decision of Security Council president allowing Zelensky speak before Russian representative.

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said that such decision would undermine the authority of the Security Council.

Earlier Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his address to the UN Security Council also strongly criticized Russia.

Antonio Guterres said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was an open violation of the United Nations Charter and international law.

Albania the president of Security Council had listed 63 speakers for the session which included Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Sergei Lavrov had arrived in New York late Tuesday, with official Russian media saying he flew to US avoiding the European airspace.
