ZAPORIZHZHIA, Russia:  The management of the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station reported that Ukrainian forces attacked a nearby electricity substation on Sunday, damaging a transformer. The incident occurred at the “Raduga” substation in Enerhodar, southeastern Ukraine.

The Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe’s largest nuclear facility, has been under Russian control since early in the 2022 invasion. Both sides frequently accuse each other of targeting the nuclear facility. Plant officials labeled the attack a “terrorist act” aimed at destabilizing the area. Despite the strike, power to Enerhodar remained unaffected.

This follows similar accusations made on September 20, when the plant’s management claimed another substation was hit. Ukrainian officials have, in turn, accused Russia of planning attacks on Ukrainian nuclear facilities ahead of winter.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) continues to call for both sides to avoid endangering the plant, with monitors stationed there to ensure its safety.
