HOBART, Australia: Pakistan pacer Zaman Khan defended six runs in a tense final over to secure a dramatic four-run victory for Brisbane Heat against league leaders Hobart Hurricanes in the Big Bash League on Wednesday.

The win came after Brisbane posted 160/8 and triggered a late collapse in the Hurricanes’ chase at Bellerive Oval.

Thrilling finish saw the Heat successfully defend a total of 160/8, disrupting the Hurricanes’ chase and sparking a crucial late-innings collapse.

Zaman holds nerve in final-Over thriller

Needing six runs off the last six balls with two set batters at the crease, the pressure was squarely on Zaman Khan.

He began perfectly, inducing a return catch from Hurricanes captain Nathan Ellis off a low full toss on the first ball.

After conceding a single, Zaman then produced two consecutive dot balls, ratcheting up the pressure exponentially.

On the fifth delivery, that pressure told as Nikhil Chaudhary (16) holed out to long-on off a slower ball.

Requiring five to win off the final ball, Zaman fired a wide, full delivery that new batter Rishad Hossain could only squeeze to deep point for a single, sealing a famous win. Zaman finished with excellent figures of 1/29, with his final over reading: W, 1, 0, 0, W, 1.

Hurricanes’ collapse triggers defeat

The Hurricanes’ chase was built on a superb 98-run partnership for the third wicket between Ben McDermott (59 off 36) and Beau Webster (51 off 43).

Their stand had the home side cruising toward the target before both fell in successive overs, triggering a catastrophic slide from 124/2 to 156/7.

Xavier Bartlett was instrumental in the fightback, claiming 3/32 for the Heat, with support from Matthew Kuhnemann (2/31).

Heat post competitive total

Earlier, after being sent in to bat, the Heat’s innings was a patchwork of contributions.

Captain Nathan McSweeney led the way with a fluent 49 from 32 balls, while Matt Renshaw provided momentum with 37 from 25. Their efforts helped post a competitive 160/8.

For the Hurricanes, Riley Meredith was the standout bowler, taking 3/40, with Ellis and Rishad claiming two wickets apiece.

The nerve-wracking win propelled Brisbane Heat into fourth place on the BBL ladder with 10 points from nine matches.

Despite the loss, Hobart Hurricanes remain at the summit with 13 points, though having played one game more.

The result throws the tournament race wide open, highlighting the fine margins in the competition.
