ISLAMABAD: Yorkshire have signed Pakistan’s left-handed opener Imam-ul-Haq to strengthen their squad for the remainder of the County Championship and One Day Cup, after the withdrawal of India’s Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The 29-year-old batsman, nephew of legendary Inzamam-ul-Haq, will be available for selection immediately and is set to make his debut in Yorkshire’s upcoming four-day clash against Surrey on July 22.

Imam’s signing comes as a timely replacement for India’s Ruturaj Gaikwad, the Chennai Super Kings captain, who pulled out just days before his much-anticipated debut with Yorkshire due to personal reasons.

Yorkshire’s head coach Anthony McGrath had acknowledged the challenge of finding a quality replacement on such short notice — a challenge that was met decisively with Imam’s arrival.

Boasting a solid international pedigree, Imam last represented Pakistan in ODIs against New Zealand earlier this year.

While his Test career has been on pause since December 2023 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and his last T20I appearance dates back to 2019, his impressive stats speak volumes: 1,568 runs in 24 Tests at an average of 37.33, alongside a stellar ODI average of 47.04 from 75 matches.

Domestically, Imam carries a strong record, averaging 43.27 across 84 first-class matches and 44.21 in 115 List A games — numbers that promise to add stability and flair to Yorkshire’s batting lineup during a critical phase of the season.

He’s been signed not only for the five remaining County Championship games but also for Yorkshire’s final eight fixtures in the One-Day Cup, with the possibility of extending his stay if the team progresses further.

Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire’s general manager, expressed enthusiasm over Imam’s rapid arrival and immediate availability.

“While we were naturally disappointed that Ruturaj couldn’t join the squad, Imam is an exceptional player with proven international quality. His familiarity with domestic cricket in England will be a huge asset as we enter a crucial block of fixtures. We’re grateful for how quickly he arrived and are excited to work with him through the end of the season.”
